Tried and Tested: 5 Health and Wellness Trends Tried

There always seems to be a new ‘trend’ that becomes a hot topic on social channels. In particular, health and wellness trends.

More people are putting their health and wellbeing as a priority. So, it is unsurprising that there is a rise in these types of trends!

It can be quite overwhelming

Do you find yourself sitting there wondering whether any of these ‘trends’ are worth trying? Well, we are here to help. Our Social and Content Exec Alex tried and tested some of this year’s hottest health and wellness trends. These are completely her own thoughts and opinions but this is to give you a completely raw and honest opinion. So, enjoy!

Plant Protein:

“There has been a huge shift from the consumption of animal products to plant-based foods. Veganism has become a huge health movement. Whether this is people making small changes, such as cutting out dairy or completely dedicating themselves to a vegan life.

To some people, going vegan may seem daunting. People can be put off by the thought that they won’t be getting enough protein. Hence the rise of ‘plant-based protein’. In particular, plant protein powders such as pea and hemp protein.

After seeing the rise of veganism and educating myself on it, I became tempted to opt for a more plant-based diet. But, I actually ended up cutting dairy and swapping my whey protein to hemp and pea protein after discovering I had a dairy intolerance. So, this ended up being the kick start I needed.

What I found:

I tried both hemp and pea protein powder blended with almond milk, oats and cacao powder. In all honesty, it didn’t have much flavour, so if you are adding it to your diet for taste then I wouldn’t recommend it. But, it is the perfect way to get muscle-building amino acids and protein into your diet. I also tried hemp protein as a shake with almond milk and was not a fan whatsoever. It has a very ‘earthy’ taste, I think is the best way to describe it. But, I have seen the availability of flavoured vegan proteins and I am keen to try these next.

Rosehip Oil:

Working for a period company means I am always on the lookout for PMS saviours. One of them being, of course, skin saviours. I came across rosehip oil and was desperate to try it myself being someone who suffers from bad skin. Rosehip oil contains essential fatty acids; vitamin E; vitamin C; and B-carotene. It reduces fine lines/wrinkles/scarring and combats damage caused by UV rays. It also is deeply moisturizing and aids in removing redness and irritation. Additionally, it has powerful anti-ageing properties.

What I found:

I cannot praise this oil enough. I. Am. Obsessed. I made sure I tried an organic one, so I could be sure it wasn’t full of anything my skin could react to. My skin felt so nourished and moisturised after I first used it. This is a huge bonus for someone like me that suffers from extremely dry skin. I have been using it for 4-months now and have seen a significant reduction in my acne scarring and redness on my face. I have also used it on places I suffered from severe eczema and have seen a significant improvement. There has been a big reduction in redness and scarring.

Turmeric:

Let’s talk Turmeric, also known as an anti-inflammatory saviour. It is “one of the most healing things around” according to Deliciously Ella. It is “the king of spices” according to Madeline Shaw. We’ve definitely mentioned it a lot. I decided to try it for my eczema due to it’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

What I found:

I love the taste of it, so always add it to meals. It has a slightly bitter taste and a rich orange colour. I have been taking turmeric tablets for almost 5-months now and they are one of my skin saviours. It is the real deal when it comes to anti-inflammatory. It helps keep my eczema calm. When I went on holiday recently, I forgot to take them with me and noticed a HUGE difference. My skin felt so much itchier and inflamed. I also tried a turmeric latte recently as a post-work pick me up and felt amazing afterwards. It leaves you feeling all warm. It was also so calming on my stomach, settling it and reducing bloating.

Clean Beauty:

People are not only becoming more conscious of their food choices, but more conscious of their makeup choices as well. The demand for non-toxic, natural, clean beauty is on the rise. I’ve become a lot more educated on it since working for TOTM. After a recent severe skin reaction, I began switching my cosmetic products. I have changed my make-up and skin care products all to natural, fragrance-free, clean alternatives.

What I found:

Well, to put it short, I’m never switching back! My skin feels so much calmer and less irritated. I’m also finding a significant reduction in the amount I’m breaking out in spots. This could also be due to diet changes, but both combined has had a huge positive impact on my skin. I also love knowing I’m not putting anything irritating or harmful on my skin.

Adaptogens:

Adaptogens work at a slow and gentle pace to help your body manage stress. They also work by helping the body fight fatigue. There are approximately 13 different adaptogens. I came across Ashwagandha and decided to try it for myself. Ashwagandha works alongside the immune system. It is significant in reducing stress levels, anxiety and fatigue. It boosts energy, is high in iron and stimulates thyroid function. It is very calming and rejuvenating.

What I found:

I did find a huge sense of calmness when I was taking it. Things that I would normally stress about, I reacted a lot calmer too. Ashwagandha is a form of nightshade. After finding out I was intolerant to nightshades I decided to stop taking it. But, I would recommend it for those who do not have an intolerance. I wouldn’t expect anything ground-breaking, but it does definitely help assist in the management of stress.”
