Cramps after your period: What causes post-period cramps?

Cramps are usually a sign your period is due or has officially arrived. But what about when you get cramps after your period? Here, we’re talking all about post-period menstrual cramps.

If you suffer from painful period cramps, it can sometimes feel like a sigh of relief when your period is over. You can pack away the hot water bottle, bath salts and pain relief! Well until your next period rolls around. But what happens if you get cramps after your period? As if you’ve not suffered enough, right?

When the cramps hit after your period

Getting cramps after your period is known as secondary dysmenorrhea. There are numerous underlying causes so it’s always good to seek medical advice. To help you out here are some potential causes of post-period cramps:

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects 1 in 10 women in the UK. Whilst Endometriosis can also present itself with additional symptoms, many sufferers experience pain before, during and after their period. Uterine Fibroids

Did you know as many as 70 to 80% of women will develop fibroids by age 50? Uterine Fibroids are non-cancerous growths on the wall of the uterus. Some people do not experience any symptoms with fibroids, but it can include prolonged periods, pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Post period cramps are also a symptom of fibroids! If you’re concerned you should consult your GP immediately.

 

Ovarian cysts

Another common underlying cause of secondary dysmenorrhea (cramps after your period) is ovarian cysts. Abnormal ovarian cysts can cause pain before and after your period. This can be accompanied by additional symptoms including problems passing urine, pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding. There are various types of ovarian cysts. Doctors can usually detect them in a pelvic examination or ultrasound.

Do not suffer in silence

It’s so important to seek advice from a medical professional if you’re experiencing pain or discomfort at any stage in your cycle. Especially if this is pain that interferes with your everyday life. For example, severe pains related to your period that forces you to cancel plans on a regular basis.
