Yoga: go with the flow

Yoga lets you tune in, chill out and shape up all at the same time. But, do you really feel like doing any sort of exercise during your period and won’t you just be pre-occupied that your granny knickers are giving you mega VPL underneath your super sheer yoga pants?

Here we share our top tips if you’re considering yoga during that time of the month:

  1. It’s ok to skip class

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; there’s no such thing as a ‘regular’ period. Some women may not experience any side effects, some may have low energy levels and some may have such extreme pain, mood swings, fatigue, bloating and irritability that they are bed-bound for the first few days. It’s important to listen to your body.

  1. Try something different

Yoga is available in many styles. If you can’t face something more vigorous like hot yoga, why not try Bikram yoga as there are no inversions, which often put women off during their menstrual cycle?

  1. Stay at home

If you’re feeling particularly irritable and can’t bear the thought of sitting in a room of chanting women, find a yoga video on YouTube and practise in the privacy and comfort of your own home.

  1. Speak to your teacher

There are varied opinions on whether you should practise yoga during your period so if you have any doubts, seek advice from your instructor. Yogic tradition suggests your body’s energy during that time of the month is apana, or flowing downward, and therefore it’s better not to mess with that by swinging your feet over your head. Whilst we’re not sure if there’s a legitimate medical reason for this, there’s certainly plenty to read on the subject, such as this article about yoga during menstruation.

  1. Tampons vs. pads

If your granny pants just aren’t cutting it as part of your ultra-trendy, high-end yoga outfit, why not try our 100% organic cotton tampons or liners? If you are health-conscious and environmentally responsible, we think organic cotton should be the obvious choice. Time for a change?

  1. Just breathe

Pranayama is an important part of yoga too. This is a series of breathing exercises that work towards cleaning the body, removing all blockages internally and of course, calming the mind.

  1. Look after yourself

Whilst gentle exercise is great, it’s also really important to follow a healthy diet during your period as it requires extra nourishment, drink plenty of water and rest up.

Namaste.
