Plastic Free July: 4 swaps to reduce plastic waste

The global plastic problem isn’t going away. The UN has declared ocean plastic a ‘planetary crisis’. Scientists predict that by 2050 there’ll be more plastic in the ocean than fish.  Here are 4 swaps that you can try this Plastic Free July to adopt a plastic-free lifestyle.

Swap 1: Plastic packaged body wash for zero-waste soap bars

Single-use plastic bottles are a key offender. If you think about how often you replace these items, it clear to see how much waste it generates. You can recycle these bottles but RecycleNow found that only 50% of bathroom waste is being recycled in the UK.

To reduce plastic waste altogether, plastic-free soap bars are the perfect alternative. Often made with natural ingredients, these modern soaps are gentle on skin. You can get soap bars to replace body wash, face wash, hand wash, and even shampoo bottles!

Check out The Little Soap companies range of Eco Warrior Cleansing bars.

Swap 2: Conventional tampons and pads for plastic-free period care

Conventional period care contributes to the plastic problem. Menstrual products are the 5th most common item found on beaches, more widespread than coffee cups and straws.  Used for seconds, plastic tampon applicators can stay in landfills for 500 years. Pads are also filled with plastic. For example, a mainstream pack of 14 pads contains the equivalent of 5 plastic carrier bags.

These days, there are so many plastic-free and even zero waste period care options. From 100% organic cotton tampons, pads, and liners to reusable menstrual cups. You can choose what fits best with your menstrual flow, budget, and lifestyle.

If you have not made the switch already, Plastic Free July could be the ideal time to have a plastic-free period.

Swap 3: Plastic deodorant tubes for refillable deodorant

Plastic deodorant tubes are another single-use item that you can swap for a less waste option. Also, it’s important to be aware that conventional deodorants can also contain aluminum and parabens. These ingredients are not so great for your body and the planet.

To reduce waste, look for reusable or refillable deodorants like this one from Wild. This deodorant is free from aluminum and parabens and comes in a reusable case. To keep it stocked up, you buy refills that are in compostable packaging – genius!

Swap 4: Plastic toothbrush for an eco-alternative brush

Did you know that most of us will replace around 300 toothbrushes in a lifetime? If these are all made of plastic, that’s a lot of plastic waste going into landfills. Also, plastic toothbrushes take hundreds of years to break down. The problem will continue to grow unless we all make a conscious change.

If you’re inspired to give a Plastic Free July challenge a go, something as simple as switching up your toothbrush could make a difference. Bamboo toothbrushes are a great option although some still have nylon bristles. This means they are not 100% plastic-free. For an alternative to the bamboo brush, Tooth is a reusable toothbrush. You keep it fresh by switching the head when you need to change it. The head and bristles are both biodegradable.

Ready for a challenge this Plastic Free July? Try these swaps to make a small change that could make a big difference over time to protect the planet.
