Is eco-friendly underwear kinder to your vagina?

Textile waste is hugely damaging to our environment, with the clothing industry being the second largest polluter in the world, second only to oil.

Choosing items of clothing that are made from ethical and sustainable materials is one way you can play your part in slowing down the rate of textile pollution.

In this blog, we’re looking at eco-swaps you can make in your underwear drawer and if a more natural, eco-friendly pair of knickers can not only be a better choice for the planet but is also better for your gynaecological health.

What’s up with synthetics?

A lot of underwear available is made using synthetic and manmade materials. A lower price and fancy design can seem appealing, but materials like polyester and nylon can take up to 200 years to break down. That leaves a lot of knickers on this planet long after we’re gone.

Not only do these types of materials cause damage to our planet, but they can also be damaging to our health. Your vagina is self-cleaning so naturally produces moisture throughout the day. Synthetic fibres, such as Lycra or spandex, will trap this moisture and heat. This creates the kind of environment that yeast and bacteria tend to thrive, leading to nasty infections and irritation. These conditions are made worse if the underwear you’re wearing is tight or too small!

Natural, eco-alternatives for your underwear drawer

When you look for a planet-friendly pair of pants, you’ll come across natural and sustainable materials like Hemp, Tencel, Bamboo and Organic Cotton. These materials are soft and naturally breathable. They’ll keep you cool by allowing air to pass through which helps to keep thrush and infections at bay. These fabrics will come from a renewable source, will be ethically produced and made without harmful chemicals. And, being naturally biodegradable, these textiles will breakdown quicker in landfill.

Organic cotton is widely recommended for both comfort and breathability when it comes to underwear. Like most natural materials, it allows heat and air to pass through and is naturally absorbent, keeping you feeling fresh and dry throughout the day. It’s important, when buying cotton, to always look for organic certification, such as GOTS or OCS. While conventional cotton farming causes serious damage to our planet with chemical toxins, organic cotton does not. An organic certification tells you that your cotton knickers have been made in decent working conditions, using less water and energy, without toxic chemicals and paid for fairly.

Choosing a natural material for your underwear is a better choice for both your body and planet. Avoid synthetics and wearing anything too tight against your skin. Breathable, absorbent and kinder to your vagina, we’re always excited to discover new planet-friendly underwear brands. Who are your favourite sustainable underwear brands?
